Veteranos de paz

La cita era a las nueve de la mañana , Tina los había llamado por turnos en grupos de dos. Como siempre yo estaba muy nerviosa pero me fui calmando al ver que todo iba tomando forma. María puso los cascos encima de la mesa y de manera improvisada, cada uno eligió con cual quería ser retratado. No nos habíamos visto antes pero tampoco importaba. Durante la sesión de fotos no hablamos mucho del pasado, no pregunté. Hablaron, entre muchísimas otras cosas que ya no recuerdo, de sus vidas ahora, de las miles de actividades que ocupan sus días, de lo que les queda por hacer y por vivir. Aquella energía me fascinó, que gran ejemplo! Imprimí las fotos y se las llevé; muchos no se reconocían, algunas mujeres se quejaban de lo serios que habían salido sus maridos y otros las miraban con curiosidad. Al cabo de un tiempo me encontré con Tina por casualidad y me contó que habían montado una exposición con las fotos… la habían titulado “Veteranos de paz”, claro.

The appointment was at 9 in the morning, Tina had arranged them in groups of two. As always I was kind of nervous, but I gradually calmed down as I realized it was all working out. Maria put the helmets on the table and in an improvised manner, each one of them chose which one they wanted to be portrayed with. We hadn’t seen each other before, but it didn’t matter. They talked, amongst many other things I don’t remember now, about their lives today and all the various activities that cope their daily routines, about what they still have left to do and to live. That energy fascinated me, what a great example! I printed the photos and I brought them there, a lot of them didn’t recognize themselves, some wives complained about the rigidness of their husbands’ expressions, while other looked at the pictures with curiosity. Some time after that I once ran into Tina and she told me they had prepared and exhibition with the photographs… they had titled it: “Peace Veterans”, of course.
